SDSU coach wants Maxwell Smith to return as player/coach
San Diego State coach Rocky Long would like to see quarterback Maxwell Smith return, but noted that if he did, Smith would not regain his spot as the team’s starting quarterback.
Instead, Long wants Smith to coach.
Smith, a graduate transfer, suffered a torn MCL during the first half of the regular season finale against Nevada. San Diego State already has applied to the NCAA for a sixth season of eligibility, but Long said sophomore Christian Chapman is the starter and Smith’s return would not change that.

Long is hoping Smith comes back to provide maturity to the quarterback position and learn the coaching side of the game.
“Since graduate students only take a couple classes, we’d let (Smith) sit in staff meetings and offensive meetings and he would sit in all the quarterback meetings,” Long said.
“He says he wants to be a coach, so that would help him to his goal of being a coach someday. He hasn’t decided he wants to do any of that yet.”

Long said the school submitted the injury waiver last week, but Smith, who is completing his graduate studies, has not yet disclosed his future football intentions.
